The ethics of priorities

people working together around a round table

You are working on a joint project with another team from your organisation. You have worked with this team successfully before but this project feels different and now the client has approached you with some concerns. The client is unhappy with the other team leader’s attitude and have requested they be taken off it for it to continue.

While you have noticed a difference in approach and behaviour on this project, you had been proceeding on the basis that you have successfully co-managed projects in the past, and that on a personal level you are close friends with the team leader and should be able to sort it out. The client, however, is quite strong on the course of action they want taken.

It is awkward, and you would prefer working through the issues, but understandably the client doesn’t want you focusing on that instead of their project.

What would you do?

When you are at work you have a duty to prioritise the requirements of you in that role. If there are 2 areas of the business that work together and one is not pulling their weight, it shouldn't be your problem. You should report this to your manager and maybe speak to your friend and tell him to get his head in the game. After all his actions are impacting the reputation of the organisation as a whole and impacting everyone. He should take responsibility.
