The ethics of holding back

A colleague has been having a hard time after experiencing bullying at work. He has been receiving medical help and has taken up the legal option of workers compensation.

Management have told you that because a legal process is now underway, contact with the person should be avoided. You have worked with this colleague for a long time and consider her a friend.
