The ethics of choice

Thursday 2 September, 2021

You’ve been working for six years in a retail bank in the same role with limited career progression. Realising your career growth is limited in this role, you recently applied for a role with a different organisation that will see you take a significant leap in your career, and higher salary. You have now been offered the role and were so excited at the new prospect you signed the contract.

Upon reflection you realise the work you’ve been doing to help vulnerable customers during Covid these past few months has been giving you unexpected job satisfaction. Although you’ve signed a contract to start this new job and given your four weeks notice, you’re now questioning the move and unsure what to do.

If you’re so excited by the change would the meaningful work remain meaningful if it means sacrificing future career progression and an increase in salaray?

What would you do?

  • What ethical considerations would help drive your decision?
  • Where does your duty lie given you've signed the contract and given notice?

We challenge you to create a healthy discussion with your colleagues and post a comment below. You could even encourage them to consider taking The Banking and Financial Services Oath! If you would like to submit an ethical dilemma to feature in an upcoming weekly challenge please email: dilemma@bfso.org.

To remain in the same role would link directly to the Oath, namely "I will help create a more just society".

In considering my decision, I would have to balance out the needs of my family and the needs of society. What would it benefit society if my family couldn't subsist on my current salary?

I suppose it’s about what’s important to you, Career growth and money or purpose driven work and helping people. If purpose is the pick maybe depending on your current job and Covid isn’t sustainable- should you look for a different role? The fact that you’ve signed a contract might mean negotiating out of it or working it for a while until they can find a replacement. Either way I think you’d have to fill your obligations.
