The ethics of monitoring

Thursday 31 October, 2024

computer screen full of coding

Your organisation uses monitoring software to track employee productivity, and the HR team discovers that a high-performing employee has been frequently visiting improper websites during work hours.

There are no direct complaints about their work, and they remain highly productive. However, their behaviour violates the organisation’s internet usage policy.

The company has not enforced this policy consistently in the past, but now there is concrete evidence of misconduct.

What do you do?

You discipline the employee as per the policy which is in place to protect individuals and the organisation from a range of issues.
The fact that the policy has not been consistently enforced in the past means that all policies can be challenged creating uncertainty.
A line needs to be drawn in the sand so that going forward expectations and commitments are adhered to.
